I remember my first job in China and my first day in the company's building on th 23rd floor. It was the day of the Sichuan earthquake...

我记得我第一份工作在中国和第一天来公司坐在二十三楼。这天是四川地震。。。

What does the "DOH" in the picture stand for? I keep thinking of the Homer Simpson when I see that accronym

Posted on: Directions for the Taxi Driver
April 3, 2014 at 8:09 AM

I think out of all taxi drivers in China, Shanghai is the most professional. However... I remember one time I was doing overtime at work and left the company at around 8 at night. Luckily (or so i thought) there was a taxi waiting by the gate. I got in and the conversation went like this

Me: "I'd like to go to XXXXXXXX"

Taxi Scammer: "I don't know where it is"

Me: "Oh don't worry, I live there, I'll give you the directions"

Taxi Scammer: "I don't know where it is"

Me: "Didn't you hear me? I said I will give you the directions"

Taxi Scammer: "Never heard of that place, don't know where it is"

Me: "I said... I... can... give... you... the... directions..."

Taxi Scammer: "Don't know where it is"

Me: "Are you going to take me there or are you going to keep repeating yourself?"

Taxi Scammer: "I don't know the place"

I left the taxi in a huff and went to security so they can call a taxi for me. No more than 30seconds later the security guard said my taxi had arrived. I wondered how it could have gotten here so quickly and to my surprise and anger when I left the building it was the same taxi.

I found out later that when my company books a taxi, the taxi driver gets to charge extra by about 10RMB. So he was forcing me to book him for the sake of 10RMB and made me go home later than I should. During the 15min journey home I sat in the back breathing heavily right behind him and glared at the rear view mirror into his eyes.  I also made it obvious by reaching my arm in front of him and took a photo of his face and the employee number and his taxi plate number when we arrived.

He was surprisingly quiet and cooperative for the whole trip. I never saw him again after that.

(too long to type in Chinese) next time ;)

I just found out the hard way that the phrase for farewell dinner (散伙反)in this lesson isn't good for some. It can mean graduating from university and friends parting ways or for a company it means the place is closing down and everyone will basically lose their jobs. Is this true?

在这个课,我最近发现用“散伙反”有时候不好用的。如果毕业和朋友分开区别的地方可以用,但是如果在公司里用有可能有这个意思公司倒闭然后员工没有工作了。这个是真的吗?

Thanks! I've noticed you're an active member here. I feeling living in Shanghai is like a roller coaster. Some days you are really happy and satisfied, some days you just want to leave this place all together. It's a dog eat dog world out there.

谢谢!我有注意到你是一个活跃会员。住在上海我觉得有时候是一个过山车。有时候非常开心也很满意。有时候我想离开这个地方。外面是一个够吃够的世界。
