Yes! The video lessons at higher levels are extremely helpful for those of us who don't live in China or who can't get there often. Watching the events, and even seeing your facial expressions in front of the mikes, provides a living context to give the words meaning. I'm sure it's labour intensive, but it is very much appreciated.

Also, I agree with frenchcp that the English subtitles should be left out, and provided only in the pdfs.

Your pretzel logic does not resemble our earth logic. :)

It's not just Hong Kong, or China. In fact, it's not uncommon to find elevators designated for specific floors in any big hotel in any big city. It's more a 'big building' thing (to alleviate crowding problems).

But why only the 18th level of Hell? What about the 17th, and the 16th, and the 15th.... They can't be much fun, either.

Just checked out clspod. That is precisely the kind of stilted, artificial language teaching that was getting me nowhere: unnaturally slow speech, standardized pronunciations, no spontaneity. The reason why there are transcripts is because the teachers simply read out their entirely scripted 'discussions' in perfectly enunciated robotic voices. Please Cpod don't go there, or I will abandon you!

It strikes me that what some people are complaining about here is precisely the advantage of ChinesePod: the pedagogy is based on real-world language learning and real-world language usage, which are holistic and interpretive. As in real life, you jump in at any point, absorb what you understand, and progress at your own pace. ChinesePod mimics real life second language learning in this way, and so speeds up the whole process for learners who do not have access to language immersion.

Transcripts tell you what was said after the event (and so you know what was said), but they don't give you a real *understanding* of the language in use. Genuine understanding in a second language (in real life) is always partial and requires successful guesswork, which in turn requires practice, and trust of your intuitions. Dependence on transcripts is like trying to swim while keeping your feet touching the ground: you can feel the ground and you can move, but you're not swimming. To swim you have to let go. This is not a fault; it is what ChinesePod is all about.
