hellotherebrick, pedreira, and bababardwan: thanks for your responses and links. Interesting reads. A little disappointing, but perhaps not unexpected. And certainly not unique to China: reminds me of my own experiences growing up in London (many moons ago, when people of South Asian descent were something of a novelty).

By the way, hellotherebrick, I found that triple-clicking on the link highlighted the whole thing (even what was not visible in the window). When I pasted that into a browser address bar, the whole address appeared.

Comments from anyone who has had first had experience of this would be perfect.

黑 has similar implications to "black" in English. I'm wondering, what is the attitude of the Chinese towards people whose skin is naturally darker--whether Chinese or foreign? Are there problems with discrimination? If so, are they connected with the negative connotations of the word 黑? (No kid gloves, please! Just be honest!)

patrick, 你没看过美国的电视广告!I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese are modelling their adverts on American tv commercials.

John, 我不相信是笑話。一定是真的。一看照相就知道手指是你的。

Wouldn't the use of the word "quilt" to translate 被子 have averted the linguistic confusion? It's the simplest term for the specific item in question, and is understood in all English speaking countries, including the U.S.

Many of the old lessons are excellent. It's a pity that they get so little traffic.

I just realized I said "Pete must have been away ...for quite a while." I mean to say "John must have been away for quite a while." (regarding cell phone usage in the States) Sorry!

Pete must have been away from the States for quite a while! One of the leading causes of car accidents here is distracted driving due to cell phone usage. People seem to believe that it is safe because they are using their earphones and their hands are free. Cultural difference? Not so much.
