I think, Veronique, Gwilym was saying Fiona's explanation is only a mnemonic that some learners might find helpful, but not how Chinese people actually imagine past and present. (According to the article, the Aymara are the only linguistic group who have been documented as seeing the past as in front of them and the future behind their backs.)

哦!知道了。Thanks, Gwilym, especially for doing the office poll, and the information that the gesture is not common. Very thorough, helpful answer! Thanks also for the link to the Aymara article. I'm inspired to do a little research into Aymara linguistics now! :)

Very helpful! But is this just a mnemonic for foreigners? Or is it how Chinese people actually think about the past and the future? If I were asked to point to the future I would naturally make a forward pointing gesture. Would Chinese speakers be more likely to point behind themselves?

To clarify:I'm really asking about the senseof 'just enough' in general (not just for eating). So how could I say "enough salt" or "enough money" without imply 'more than enough'? Does "够了" have that sense too? Is the difference contextual, conveyed by tone of voice, or is there another word or expression that is used?

哇!Fi 会施魔法。真可怕!

够有意思! But how would you express the 'just sufficient' sense of "enough"? How would I say that I've eaten enough, but without implying that I had eaten more than enough?
