This lesson is particularly well done; lots of expression in the actors' voices which helps a bunch with comprehension.
(How in the world would you say great work on this lesson? Google translates great work as 伟大的 工作、 which I think is not quite what I wanted to convey...)

May 27, 2008 at 11:57 AMIs Blue Sword beer known as 'war ba' in anyone else's neighborhood? Anyone know why? It says 蓝剑 lan2jian4, blue sword, on the label.
(The Chinese characters on this new interace are really hard to see when you are typing them in, and ctrl-z、ctrl-y are way messed up.)

May 26, 2008 at 5:25 PMnonono. Baked, not steamed. With a crust! baozi have no crust. As for portions for da pan ji, it's served differently in different places. Sometimes you just order for however many people in your party; sometimes you can order 'xiao pan ji' for just two or three people.

May 25, 2008 at 1:42 AMwe have a park with open air karaoke areas (mostly older people) all over it. A few weeks ago I was watching one group under a big banner ：想唱 就唱 xiang3chang4 jiu3chang4. (If you feel like singing, sing!) In one of the bao fangs I was trying to decipher what I thought was a food and drink menu card and was shocked at all the prices, then my more literate friend informed me that it was a list comprising the penalties for damaging various aspects of the room.

May 23, 2008 at 3:05 PMThis is pretty helpful. For the longest time I thought 保安 was the security department rather than the individual guys. No one has ever understood me when I asked about 公安. I thought the station would be 公安站 but nobody ever got that either. took me a very long time to figure out the words that people understand: 警察 jing3cha2 for police and 派出所 pai4chu1suo3 for the station.

May 23, 2008 at 2:40 PMBack on topic: Does anyone know the name of the little savoury turnovers they make at Xinjiang restaurants that have lamb and onions on the inside and a bread dough crust? The things are baked and taste like they've been brushed with salt water. They call them something like 'ge bo si' but I've never been able to figure out the characters. They go amazing with Xinjiang Suntime (新天) wine, which is my favourite native Chinese wine....not that that is saying much.

May 22, 2008 at 8:13 AM加州 和 韩国 都 有 牡蛎／炒蛋 特色菜. 加州的 (hangtown fry) 包括 培根 jiāzhoū hé hánguó doū yoŭ mŭlì／chăodàn tèsècài。jiāzhoū de (hangtown) fry bāokuò péigēn. Funny, I didn't know Taiwan had their own version of an oyster omelet. From the recipe it sounds a bit like the Korean version.
