Could there be a problem here with a difference between word for word translation and character by character translation?

Again a very interesting lesson with Connie and David. Maybe we could get the links mentioned at the end written down?

Good show, but agree about the missing vocabulary and no pictures - especially for the not so common games

I think that Far Eastern Economic Review (Hong Kong) tried to trace this rumor about live monkey brain many years ago and came up with a blank - they could only locate people who had heard that other people had heard and so on.

Another rumor - the story has led some people (not necessarily Chinese) to pay a lot of money to actually having the "dish" served!

I can recommend 蜗居 - and also the book with the same name by 六六, on which the play is based. I don't know if the series were actually banned at some point in time, but I read that two episodes were cut out because of too explicit sexual scenes - not because of politics. All the broadcasted episodes can be seen on Youku. I find it very useful for language learning, but also of great interest in trying to understand modern China.

I also heard that many Chinese viewers did not like the play because they found it too realistic - no happy ending.

This has probably been explained somewhere else - but still:

Any reason for 280 being erbai, and 299 being liangbai? Same person speaking. Could you just as well say liangbai ba and erbai jiushijiu?

I was told that the bad fengshui came from the two antennas (?) on top. Looks like incense sticks at a grave or funeral. Same reason you should never stick your chopsticks upright in the bowl
