Cultural exchange, education, ngos, diplomacy (ah, thats probably too touchy). Some topics have been briefly touched in old series, but I like the way your show goes deeper.

Thanks for the link. Also found this explanation of modern usage: "Be recklessly irresponsible, unreliable, or deceitful".
Business people (in China or anywhere) 打擦边球 a lot - not necessarily recklessly, but certainly with deceit.
As with all translations the key is the context. Out of four sentences in the dialogue and expansion sentences, only one uses the translation "fast and loose".

OK. But I still have a feeling that the Chinese expression stresses the opportunity of winning, whereas the English saying put more emphasis on the risk of loosing - but anyway, I'm not a native English speaker.

June 5, 2009 at 1:28 PMFor me the discussion between Jenny and John works fine. With an intermediate lesson I listen first without looking at the written material. The discussion then clarifies most of the things I didn't get. I have found, that by only listening I remember the words and phrases much better than when I just look them up in the PDF. For years I have tried to improve my spoken Chinese mainly based on written material - lousy results. I'm living far away from China, so the ChinesePod lessons are great substitutes for a more "natural" learning environment for the spoken language.

As far as I remember there is an explanation of "chao youyu" in the comments to the lesson in the Lao Wang series where he gets fired. It has something to do with rolling up your bedding like a squid rolls up when fried

September 22, 2009 at 12:47 PMVery interesting and timely interview. This morning my newspaper here in Denmark carried a long article about China taking the international lead in clean energy. On the contrary the Climate Summit due in Copenhagen later this year is threathened by failure, due to feet dragging on the American side.
On a different note: Memories, Chengdu late 1984, hot chicks and tough guys in high leather boots and trendy jackets drinking and brawling in the bar at the Jinjiang Hotel, while serious laobaixing were dancing in a small café near the river to amazing pop tunes - old with young, men and women, men with men and girls together. And the rumour of the night - now public dancing will also be allowed in Beijing! You could just sit down and see China opening up in front of your eyes.
