February 22, 2008 at 2:14 PMdaxiong, I know that 繁體 v. 简体 is a different subject, but isn't handwriting generally simplified? Also, I ran into a reference in an old (1964) textbook by DeFrancis which mentioned 间笔字/間筆字。 Does anyone have any idea what this refers to?

My personal favorites are a fried bread stick （油条/油條/YóuTíao) and soy milk (豆浆/DòuJiāng) and some sort of fried bread with red chili paste served in the Western Sichuan/Northern Yunnan minority regions that's absolutely delicious (no idea what its called).

February 11, 2008 at 3:20 AMI have heard that 恭喜发财 developed mostly in Southern China and is somewhat looked down upon by Northerners. Anybody know if this is the case and, if so, what a traditional Northern greeting might be?

February 10, 2008 at 6:53 PMThe term "food poisoning" seems overly dramatic. The average experience (at least mine) is more like the stomach flu. You just suck it up, hang around a flush toilet for the requisite time period, and get over it. The rewards of finding great out-of-the-way street food far outweigh the occasional inconvenience.
