Hi, it's interesting topic. Now I have one question about a phrase, "你可得给妈妈争口气". This sentence is translated as 'You really have to make your mother proud'. I understand that 争 means 'fight' and 口气 means 'tone of voice' but can't figure out why it can mean 'proud'. Can anyone explain?

The fake one can not be updated either. That's why I bought an iPhone from Hong Kong, which works well in the Mainland China. Also I cannot recommend to buy the 'real' iPhone being now sold in China, since it doesn't have the Wi-Fi function (if an iPhone doesn't get Wi-Fi, can it be 'real'?).

As for the civil servants exams introduced in the late 19th century, like any other systems, had the upside and downside. The Japanese writer Shiba Ryotaro wrote that the young people at that time were inspired to dream about their future by this system, since prior to the Meiji Restoration, their futures were destined due to the feudal system no matter how they were smart. In this sense, this system could be said pretty fair. Of course, on down the road, the downside became obvious, as this drove people to an education-obsessed society. In a couple decades, the government adopted so-called "more relaxed education" policy, which backfired as a drastic academic falling among youngsters.
