Nobody's going to change the way cpod does business. The way it is now is strictly comfort levels for those already at those levels. This also provides snob appeal for those people. It is unfortunate that newbies or elementary types didn't voice an opinion. Or it could be like all the students I've met in all the classes I've been in, in the last four years. Ho Hum! They all dropped out of classes and completely given up!! Not this kid, though! I know exactly what I want, and I know exactly how to get it!!!!

And if I asked somebody to explain to me what I was hearing on Chinese radio, and if that person explained it in Chinese, don't you think that would be kind of stupid???

Furthermore, I can understand about 70% of what I hear on Chinese Radio. I've completely analyzed what I need to get closer to 100%. I can easily recognize 100% of the words I hear in normal conversation now. What I'm missing is word usage and a better understanding of structure. If somebody explained to me in "Plain English" what I'm hearing, I guarantee I'd be fluent in Chinese in a very short time! I bet I know very close to 2000 chinese words (1 or more characters/word). This should be enough to be able to communicate in chinese!!

henning You obviously missed the whole point of learning chinese by english people. The more advanced dialogs may have important structures and word usage that you may not find in the newbie or elementary levels. I just came back from Barnes & Nobles book store and browsed several language courses. Most of them state "In Plain English" It's the structure & word usage that is the key to learning chinese. That is exactly what you guys don't want to explain!!! It looks like the only way to get this is from books and not from ChinesePod!!! I have a book "Beyond the Basics" It still gives explanations in plain english!!

Hi umbrella! It’s nice to see a Newbie up here in the Upper Intermediate! I am thinking that you listened to the mp3 audio file. I am very curious what you thought of the explanations being in chinese! It seems I’m the only one on cpod that would like to hear explanations in plain english!

AZERDocMom I developed a Visual Basic software program to solve Sudoku. So far I was able to solve the most simplest, now I'm working to perfect it to be able to handle the more difficult ones. BTW, I'm leaving for LA tonight after work. I'll be passing through Arizona. I have a Sister in Tucson and a brother in LA. My primary reason to go to LA is to be immersed totally in Chinese. So far I'm able to understand better than 60% what I hear on chinese radio, I'm hoping to increase that at least to 70% in the next week or so.

xiaohu I developed some software to insert tones automatically. This is especially handy when writing pages of pinyin. This was to help some of the students in one of my classes. They only were interested in learning pinyin, but reading a lot of pinyin with numbers makes it hard on the eyes. Hey, I'm going to LA for a short vacation - Monterrey Park. This way I can become totally immersed - the next best thing to being in China! Hi Auntie! Hi Poh!

The main reason I've been off cpod this past week is because I picked up a book 'A Guide to Proper Usage of Spoken Chinese' For me this is a must read book, it gives both Typical Errors, and Proper Usage. I must add that everything is explained in plain english. It also uses traditional characters. For those that don't have professional chinese classes in their background probably never learned proper structure which this book has teaches.

franch If you said it in chinese, I didn't read it. Somebody gave me a list of people that normally write good chinese. I don't know where that list is and the amount of time I have to read is limited. I signed up at another place that offers Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese lessons. For all 4, it only costs about $50 for a lifetime subscription. I'm interested in all 4, and I'm hoping that they will also offer Cantonese in the near future.
