RE "c" sound.

Like others I had great problems working out how to pronounce the "c" sound. My teacher said, "It's like the ts in cats." But When I tried to pronounce it like that she said it was wrong - it sounded more like an "s". Then I tried to just pronounce it like a "t" for that particular word, and apparently it sounded acceptable.

So I was confused. The "like a ts sound" was very, very unhelpful advice. It was only when later, after studying some phonetics, as part of my ESL teacher studies, that I figured out that it was necessary to begin the sound with my tongue behind my BOTTOM teeth. After that I got it right.

Thanks to Calkins for that pronunciation site showing mouth and tongue positions. As an ESL teacher I sometimes have to do the same for students learning English, especially the "th" sounds, and "l" and "r" sounds for Koreans.

ALL foreigners are afraid of the heat??

Some of us come from hot places too. Where I come from the temperature ranges from a humid 37 degrees C in summer to about +5 degrees C in winter minimum, although often still in the 20's in winter daytime.

How does Matt C find the heat?

There's still a big range of temperatures within China. I like Kunming's climate!
