My new blog

I've started a new blog here. I hope to discuss learning, web 2.0, and other broad themes!  I most certainly welcome your thoughts and opinions. In my first couple of posts I try to summarize some of my thinking on the new learning. I also talk about James Joyce and read a passaage from Finnegan's Wake. (Finnegan is turning in his grave.)

I will continue to post at the Praxis blog, but the focus there will concern more practical issues, such as updates and so on.

I look forward to hearing from the Big Brain again!

If James Joyce will be there, I have no choice but be there. Do you think Orwell will visit one day too?

Oh, and most importantly - I also found the blog interesting. Makes me want to send Ken my resume. I will follow with great interest. If only we could predict the twists and turns that await us. We are surely living in exciting times.

Afaf, I think there's a fair chance that Mr Orwell could show up at some point. I'm not sure I could do his accent, though. John, I'll try to live up to your linguistic requirements, though I know they are expansive!

.....and eventually it will become God, go back in time and create the universe. The omega point. Mongo youre scaring me. There is truth in what you see however. Perhaps we will someday be governed by a huge computer. A U.S. president with intelligence (artificial or otherwise) would be a welcome change.

Hi Ken, As you probably know about me, one of my reasons for learning Chinese since 2001 and getting a masters in all that surrounds Chinese studies, after being a web programmer for 5 years in Silicon Valley, is because I am so interested in the learning of Chinese and the resources that are there and are still needed for Chinese, or any languages in general. Desire to be a bridge and provide resources necessary between Western and Chinese culture. That is probably why I so admire ChinesePod. The main way ChinesePod comes up probabl weekly in conversations with anybody (Westerner or Chinese) is because I express my interest in teaching Chinese. They usually thing that it should be native Chinese speakers that teach such a complicated language, and native speakers in general for any langauge. Yet ChinesePod and the way you do learning here, it is almost essential that you have a westerner and Chinese teaching, otherwise it would be quite boring, no matter how good the Chinese teacher is, in my opion. When I tell whoever I get to share ChinesePod with this, it gets them to think a bit, especially realizing how much culture goes into the learning of this language. Of couse have a dialog between a Westerner and a Chinese in a classroom would not work well, nor in textbooks and accompanying audio. Those have been my realization as I think about ChinesePod and the model you got going here. I should be learning more about web 2.0 as I hope to also be able to join such educational models after I am finished with my masters. While I've followed your conversations a bit, probably not enough. Where would be the best place to start learning more about learning, web 2.0 and such as a kinda-newbie to the topic? Hope to catch up and follow your blogs more. -Rich

Ken 2.0! a very insightful blog !! I read it with great interest on the topic of learning 2.0...you have some interesting ideas about peer-to-peer learning and mass collaboration! Not to diverge too far into the realm of science fiction, but I almost feel that by participating in the mass collaboration of the internet we in turn building some type of giant-brain or matrix-of-all-known... perhaps, wikipedia exemplifies the begining of something new on the horizon... ideas connected to ideas, connected to ideas, connected to ideas, connected to ideas... Its almost like some type of lawnmower man...you feel like at some point the internet is going to gain its own consciousness and awareness.. with wikipedia as its gray matter and a million blogs on every matter to weigh against.....:-) and of course the birth of collective consciousness of all humanity will be able to speak Chinese, thanks to chinesepod.com of course... :-D
