I think MorsecodePod would be cool. ;)

This is a pretty good site though: http://www.learnmorsecode.com/

Is there such thing as Chinese morse code?

This is how Chinese morse code works:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_telegraph_code

Looks like you need a codebook though, you can lookup the codes here:

http://www.njstar.com/tools/telecode/

你好 is 01321170, which would be ----- .---- ...-- ..--- .---- .---- --... ----- in morse code. ;)

Hey bazza, thank you for clearing up a mystery which had been bugging me! So Chinese morse code is based on an assigned 4-digit code for each one of up to 7,000 characters? Goodness.

I've watched -- and re-watched -- all three "Infernal Affairs" movies, and upon each viewing I just couldn't help wondering about the morse code, which is such a key element of the plot. But I didn't find it on wiki because I was too dense to look up Chinese "telegraph code" (as opposed to "morse").

Thanks!

Hi Bazza,

Very educational thread. If I missed opportunity to look into here today, I would never know how to send morse code in Chinese in the rest of my life. By the way, one of my Chinese-Japanese dictionaries, published in 1992, shows you a telegraphic code (电码) for every Character. But I must say it has had no significance to me UNTIL THIS MORNING!I believe your dictionaries don't list such already-useless code numbers. I'd like to get a new dictionary!

Anyway, it seems to be impossible to send (or decode) morse-coded Chinese quickly, because you need to find 4-digit code numbers for characters beforehand. Sending pinyin Chinese (with tone marks 1,2,3,4) would be much faster, though there is no guarantee that a recipient would understand them 100% precisely.

If your interested in learning morse code I found this free program: http://justlearnmorsecode.com/

You listen to the tones and type the letters and it gives you your accuracy after 5 mins, it starts with 2 characters and when you can do it with 90% accuracy you add another letter.

Auntie, the 'Infernal Affairs' Flims are amazing!! Tony Leung is very HOT. I love the third film so much. Never really put much thought in to the morse code that they have films.

Infernal Affairs? Was that the detective movie where  Andy Lau  starred in?

Bazza, recently the question of morse code in Chinese occured to me as well, and I looked it up. I was amazed to see that they indeed do have a system. I thought of you at the time and intended to send you the link but it must have slipped my mind. It just seemed like something you would be interested in. I doubt anyone would learn the code - you would have to use a translation chart after recieving the message. I have not seen infernal affairs. Will have to check it out.
