August 19, 2008, 04:31 PMIn Binondo, my favorite is Wai Ying along Benavidez st. It's a simple hole-in-the-wall eatery, but the food is authentic and cheap. Their dimsum servings are huge and always fresh. It's worth the trip. And since it's right smack in the heart of Chinatown, you go straight to shopping! Down the street there this nice looking bakery. Like Breadtalk, but the Chinese version.
In the Greenhills area along Ortigas Avenue, their this place called Masuki. Here, their noodles are top notch. Big bowls of streaming broth and lots flavorful toppings to choose from. Their steamed buns and pork dumplings are also exceptionally tasty. Simple yet satisfying.
The Hong Kong Chef restaurant chubbeecheeks23 was referring to is a really good family-style restaurant, which i think is better than the more established franchises North Park, Superbowl, and Tang City chillosk was talking about. The food comes out quickly and servings are quite generous. The service is excellent too. Servers know the menu well and give excellent suggestions.

August 20, 2008, 04:03 AMhi nickcripps,
I live in Binondo :) The best ones are the hole in wall type of places...my favorites are
Sincerity Restaurant- Carvajal St., near Binondo Church. They are famous for their Sincerity chicken and oyster cake
Tasty - Masangkay St. try the Porkchop Rice and Silver roll bread with Hongma
Estero - it's an eatery beside the Ongpin bridge near the canal hence the name estero is derived from...This is not the cleanest place to eat but if you are adventurous, they serve delicious hototay soup, fried pork
Quan Yin Chay- Masangkay St., If you like vegetarian food, you must visit this place. They have delicious Tofu based dishes there
You should also try the "fried shanghai siopao" 煎包- it's pan fried with meat filling and chives. It's almost sold in all corners of Ongpin and it's very cheap only P12 per pc.
Is there really 煎包 in Shanghai? http://www.flickr.com/photos/annalyn/180483407/

Emerald Garden's chinese name is 頤和園
yíhéyuán- I think this is also the name of the summer palace in Beijing
Outside Binondo
Legend Restuarant- Pasay City near Boom na Boom. It's a bit expensive but food is very good and authentic.
Crisgee, the bakery near WaiYing is called Xin Yi Long 新義隆 - they have similar concept with Bread Talk but the prices are much cheaper. I think their bread with floss is only P25
Nakakagutom naman itong usapan natin...

September 07, 2008, 04:03 AMAha! Food! My favorite topic!
Miss ko na talaga ang pagkain sa Pinas! My wife and I make sure that we go back to Manila to vacation for at least 3 weeks every year. Diyan napupunta lahat ng bakasyon ko from work.
Sa Manila madalas ang Chinese food only 2 kinds lang: Cantonese or Taiwan/Fujianese.
Wala akong alam na masarap na Chinese restaurant na ibang style, such as 山东,四川,湖南,上海。
Anybody know any?

September 07, 2008, 11:08 PMHey Hitokiri,
Nice to hear from you again. Hahaha, natawa ako dun sa sagot mo Chowking!
Anyway, Chowking's owner used to be a schoolmate of mine, until they sold it to Jollibee.
Now, Chowking is all over the place, even here in the US.

September 13, 2008, 07:09 AMHey aclchan! Sorry for the late reply... I've been busy with school work. Hehe...and I thought that only Jollibee was the only Filipino restaurant that opened in the US. Since when did Chowking open in the US?
alanchan
September 17, 2008, 06:00 AMHey Hitokiri,
Ah, Chowking has been in business here for at least 3 years na, most likely longer. Meron din dito Red Ribbon, Goldilocks, Barrio Fiesta, and even knock-offs of Ling Nam and Ma Mon Luk.

August 14, 2008, 08:30 AMhi! yup. emerald garden along roxas blvd. is a classic in our family. we have almost all our special events there --more than 10 yrs?
another favorite is Causeway Restaurant in Banawe, QC and they also have one in Timog.
Chinatown Best Food in Banawe. the all-you-can-eat buffet there is pretty good.
A friend also suggested the Hong Kong Chef at HK Sun Plaza along Macapagal Ave. Haven't tried it though :)

September 30, 2008, 04:18 PMMa Mon Luk. Aaaah, the best siopao this side of the South China Sea. haha.
And they claim that the word, "mami" comes from them.

October 17, 2008, 04:56 PMMa Mon Luk's siopao is still alive, but in under a new name --- Masuki! Same owner, or rather child of owner ito.

October 18, 2008, 01:38 AMMasuki? Ginawang Japanese yata, ah?

October 22, 2008, 12:10 AMEwan ko ba. Pero imbento lang talaga yung pangalan. Yung chinese characters sa taas ng sign nila says "Ma's Noodle House" indicating that Ma's descendants still operate the place.
chillosk
October 22, 2008, 12:52 AMSo they own Masuki?
Didn't really like it eh. Hehe
alanchan
October 23, 2008, 04:26 AMYeah, Cris is right...
Masuki na nga ang bagong pangalan ng Ma Mon Luk ngayon. Actually, it has been Masuki for quite a while now.
Anyway, my experience with Masuki is that people either like it or they don't. Usually, people who grew up eating that kind of food absolutely love coming back regularly, but people who did not grow up with this kind of food think that they are "amoy-pawis"... :)

October 23, 2008, 04:29 AMHey chubbeecheeks23,
Yes, I was talking about high school. I was not referring to Mr. Robert Kwan, but his son too. Not that old... hehehe :)

August 06, 2008, 01:50 PMHmm, good Chinese restaurants. North Park is a classic favorite among yuppies and families because it's cheap. Same with Superbowl of China and Tang City. The Ayala Glorietta complex has all of these so you might want to head there.
If you're looking for classier haunts, try Gloria Maris in Greenhills. I also heard that the newly opened Choi Garden near Annapolis, Greenhills is pretty good. :)
And going to Emperor's Villa in Binondo is actually like taking a portal straight to Shanghai/Beijing - really good authentic Chinese food. I even think they serve 乌龟 there.
