December 09, 2008, 05:23 PM好嘢 - a Cantonese group. I am far from fluent, but got down the basics. Have been spending much more time on Cantonese than Mandarin recently, because it is much more fun to learn and use.

December 10, 2008, 12:21 AMYeah, cantonese can be a lot of fun when I really feel that I can pronounce the word correctly. It's a real satisfied feeling, but when I'm conversing with someone in cantonese there is always something that makes me say the tones incorrectly because I'm translating in my head from mandarin. I should think in Cantonese and talk cantonese naturally.But that's not possible because I'm not able to say everything in Cantonese yet. Lately I've been watching some hongkong soaps and feicui news hoping to imporve it further.
The worst of learning cantonese is that I can hear whether my tones are pronounced correctly. It's very frustrating if you don't have it correct. The tone in 命 is one of my troublesome words in which I can't get the tone correct.
Sebastian, how have you been learnning cantonese so far and for how long? Do you mostly talk with people to improve or watch a lot of Hongkong soaps?

I have been learning Cantonese seriously for about a year now. When I started a friend told me that it is better to treat Cantonese and Mandarin as completely different languages (even though they are not) and not to try to learn Cantonese through Mandarin. So I got a complete beginner's textbook for English speakers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and went through it to get a feel for the grammar and learn basic vocabulary. After that I attended a 3 months long course.
Now I am learning from a number of different sources. Some more advanced Cantonese books available in Hong Kong, older TVB shows (because they are not as retarded as some of the current shows), and of course by chatting with local friends. I am learning the most through my friends. Also, whenever there is a situation in my daily life that I can't handle in Cantonese, I will write down the words I need to know and look them up later.

December 10, 2008, 06:10 PMI've been learning Cantonese for about a year from my girlfriend. I feel like the similarities between it and 国语 actually help me out. Now, the reading part is where I'm very, very deficient. I want to improve my everday usage and ability to read it.

December 06, 2008, 12:26 AMHey, nice to see that you have opened this little cantonese group! My cantonese isn't perfect to tell you the truth. I often feel ashamed of it, because it hinders my communication with the cantonese speaking community. And suddenly speaking mandarin to them makes me feel "很不好意思", because it would look like I'm showing off with mandarin or something else.
And wontlungsek, you're a native Cantonese speaker I assume for your name looks to be written in that style. I'm a native hakka speaker, but my vocabulary is very small and reading chinese texts in hakka has been practically impossible. But since my grandma moved in to live with us, I had her read chinese papers and texts for me in Hakka, and I would slowly repeat after her. And studying a little of Hakka has actually improved my listening skills in Cantonese. I can close my eyes and listen to feicui news and understand some 90% of all that is said (without the aid of subtitles).
I would really love to find ways to improve my cantonese. A chinese text or a small article read in cantonese would be a real help, if there are any resources out there on the web.
And how have you others experienced learning catonese? Was it more difficult that mandarin or easier? (I hope I'm not off topic.)

@duncan: I'm not a native Cantonese speaker, but I have a dad who's Canto. Actually, I just started learning Cantonese for the past 2 years. I'd listen to Cantonese rap songs to improve on my comprehension skills. Cantonese rap songs even improved me on how fast I could comprehend spoken Cantonese.

Thanks for starting up this new group. I am a native Min-nan hua speaker but have always been fascinated with Cantonese. I know basic Cantonese as well, having visited Hong Kong many many times throughout the years I was living in Philippines. Even now that I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I still get exposed to a lot of Cantonese, so I am really motivated to learn more about the language. The food and the culture are exceptional, and the business opportunities endless, when you know Cantonese.

It's just because I've been with some people in China dragging along with their business rides and they were a little hindered for not being able to speak Mandarin fluently, whereas Cantonese would be no problem at all if the other party knew Cantonese.
With doing business, you mean in Hongkong I suppose? I don't really know much about that region to tell you the truth. Would be a real help if you could tell me a bit how it is to do business there compared to China.
