@john

yes i think that would be a much better system. if it saves time for you guys thereby enabling more time to focus on more important functions then i can't see why not.

I'm with Changye, both emails and PM would be good.  For some reason I don't even get notified when I get a PM in the current system. Does anyone else have that?  I made another user and yet when that account gets PM it sends it to my website's email, so I know that chinesepod.com emails aren't blocked....weird.

Anyway, yes, more functionality with the PMs.  I know it's a little off topic, but I still think it would still be really nice if also each post in a lesson's discussion had a "post reply" button (or whatever it is to post a public message in reply) and then that reply is nested with the message it replies to... but even if not, even if the post is still put at the end of the discussion list, it would be great if:

1) somewhere in the new post, it told all users who's previous post it was a reply to

2) [related to this topic now] emailed the person of the post it is a reply to to notify him/her of the new message.  I think I would be so much more active if I knew when my posts received a reply, not just to see if discussion I participated have new posts (but even if we had a choice to be emailed that info, that would be a step in the right direction).

Anyway, just my 2分

John,

I agree with your points about not reinventing the wheel and also think that the PM feature should not be a high priority. As you rightly say the educational content is the high priority here.I don't know if it's possible, but I would think the ideal is to have a setting tab for your PM's where you elect to have PM's sent to a] email;b] CPod Inbox;or c] both email and inbox.Personally I would opt for c] .This has the advantage that while on the CPod site one would immediately see when a message came in rather than having to go elsewhere to check, and at the same time, have all the archiving/other benefits of email.I also think the default option for new users should be to receive PMs to their inbox till they've figured out such a settings tab.

Sounds like a very good idea to me!

I would prefer receiving both, PM and e-mail.

It's been said but, yes it saves over looking messages. With WebMail Notifier on firefox, no emails ever get over looked from both my email addresses, this isn't always the case on cpod.

Hi John,
good news. Got to send a message to Changye immediately. ;)

Here are more advantages of the new approach:

  • Our E-Mail-Clients systems have Sent-Folders
  • Messages don't get overlooked that easily
  • I can reach even users who are not coming to the regular site as often anymore or only use the mobile site (e.g. Bazza)

this would requre everyone to supply their email to cpod. Will this work? Those who do not will be unreachable?  Why all this work when the current system works fine.  Just add an email copy option like we used to have.

I would rather have PDF's on QW. Spend your time on that.

I noticed another problem about the personal messages... (or do I miss something?):

I remember there was a "find other users" search option once..and before that there was something like a "your favorite users" list option... this was very useful together with the personal message sending...

It is easy to "pm" someone who posts very often because you will most likely find his/her name somewhere on the startpages of the posts... or if you already have his/her posts in your archive...

but what if not? you have to remember where you saw this person post last time...or open some lesson discussions and search through the threads...

...or how do others do it?

Gesa

on the search function in the top banner you can choose, by drop down, either "lesson" or "community". If you search community you can find users.

I haven't used the PM system because it is clunky so an improvement would be welcome although not high priority.

I'm curious though, if the proposal is that we will be able to search received mail in gmail - I can't search my FB messages by name, only noreply@Facebookmail.com.  And sent mail will be in CP just as now?  I'm not clear on the search proposal.
