... seems as if Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller might need to spend more time here on Chinesepod tigtening up his pronunciation!

Amazing to be so interconnected through ChinesePod such that we can share such diverse intellectual and downright funny threads thanks Mandomikey!

Obitoddkenobi: Glad you enjoyed it. But intellectual?? Really?? Between this and the belly button fuzz thread, we might all be at risk of having our MENSA membership cards taken away! This article talks about Miller preparing for the shoot. You'll see they vaguely suggest the language as "Chinese": http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/sabresnhl/story/243257.html

I've seen the intellectual in you on other days, today was funny. Besides, I was speaking collectively. I'm really thankful for all the contributions of Cpod "poddies" as they call us all (sounds like a word that came from the other side of the pond to me).

maybe someone should send Ryan Miller a subscription to Cpod. Thanks, mandomikey - I love it when hockey and chinese are mixed :)

"I love it when hockey and chinese are mixed" I figured you would... I do too. In this case, double bonus for me as Buffalo is my fav team, and I happened to be at the outdoor New Year's Day game where they first screened this on the jumbotron. The whole stadium (75,000+) burst out in laughter... classic moment!

Bingge, I take it that you are also a fan, as am I, of the greatest hockey team on earth, the 底特律紅翼隊 (di3 te3 lu4 hong2 yi4 dui4) and are as confident as I am that for the fourth time in the past 12 years they will win the 史丹利杯 (shi3 dan1 li4 bei1) this season.

Count me in for the Red Wings too. Looking good for the 史丹利杯 (shi3 dan1 li4 bei1) this season.

Here are some links to Chinese-language hockey stories/info: Ming Pao story about Team Canada winning the World Junior championships yesterday - http://www.mingpaovan.com/htm/News/20080106/vsf1h.htm Wikipedia entry for the Red Wings and for the Sabres, from which you can find links to the Wikipedia entries of all other NHL teams: http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%BA%95%E7%89%B9%E5%BE%8B%E7%B4%85%E7%BF%BC http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%B0%B4%E7%89%9B%E5%9F%8E%E8%BB%8D%E5%88%80 If anyone here is unfortunate enough or misguided enough to be Toronto fans, I'd suggest Googling the Chinese words for "losers" or "joke franchise" and probably something relevant to the Leafs will show up.

mandomikey - I've always liked Buffalo unless they were playing the wings and I always liked Hasek until he came to the wings :) I was sad to see Ozzie go and later Legacy because we acquired Hasek. I'm so jealous that you got to watch the outdoor game on New Years! That must have been so awesome! lordstanley - wow - a 最爱底特律红翼队的加拿大人?!! haha- I figured you would chime in, as you are obviously a 冰球迷 :) Thanks for the terms and links. I'm going to check out the links now. 你们都打冰球吗?

我年青的时候打冰球。现在太老了。那时候住在底特律。在 底特律的 Palmer Park 打过. 那时候爱底特律红翼队在Olympia 冰场打。Hockey Night in Canada was my favorite tv show. Mandomikey, I'll save the date. Is it in Detroit of Buffalo?

Haha, Bingge. Actually, tons of Wings die-hards who are Canadian. I'd estimate that on any given night at the Joe about 25% are hosers, from Windsor, Chatham, Darren McCarty's Leamington, etc. We're the ones wearing touques instead of "stocking caps". I'm originally from Sarnia, about an hour's drive from the Joe (or 50 minutes if Bob Probert was driving), a town which over the years has pumped out notable Wings coaches and players such as Ted Garvin, Bill Lochead, Harry Neale, Paul Ysebaert, Shawn Burr and Dino Cicarelli. Still listen to Ken & Paul via the Internet and watch Ken & Mickey via Centre Ice. And while finding a whole 章鱼 (zhang1 yu2 octopus) in Vancouver is not always easy, I made sure when I attended the Wings elimination of the Canucks in the 2002 playoffs to bring in some leftover takeout calimari and toss it over the boards. There used to be a Chinese-language Brendan Shanahan tribute Web page somewhere, back when he played for the Wings, and I'll take a look to see if it's still up. I played a ton of hockey in Ontario and Michigan growing up, but also have good memories of playing rooftop ball hockey atop Taipei high-rises. I was also in a bar in China last year - I can't for the life of me recall if it was Beijing or Shanghai - that had a few Canadian bartenders and that would play on its TVs some tapes of recent Hockey Night in Canada games flown over from Canada. Here's a blog post by a Canadian girl about skating indoors in Beijing in the summertime. http://www.gadling.com/2007/06/03/a-canadian-in-beijing-summer-ice-skating/

Looks like I'm outnumbered here! But I'm glad to see the Dominator having another respectable year in goal ... I always liked Hasek's feistiness when he played for Buffalo. Curious, what is the English breakdown of those characters (史丹利杯)? I don't see 红 anywhere in there.
