There are two ways to write numbers. One, we call it 小写 [xiǎoxiě] which literally means "lower case". They are 一二三四五六七八九十. The other one is 大写 [dàxiě] which means "capital". They are 壹贰参肆伍陆柒捌玖拾. We mostly write capital numbers on formal documents. But here, actually both 五 and 伍 work.

People can always tell the difference from the context or intonation. Besides, if it's a question, there's always a 啊 at the end of the sentence. 叔叔有几个外国朋友啊?If people really can't tell the difference, they ask.
