Hmmm... I would add that when you are really stumbling on advancing to the next level. I've been told that the jump from Pre Intermediate to Intermediate is a steep jump so that may be a helpful time to get some outside help. However if you are able to go on to the next level and seem to manage it okay I would keep flying solo till you need that extra help.

I would give it a shot! I think you would be surprised by what you know. It sounds like you've given care in making your own flashcards and reviewing. I feel like there is also a fine line of how they separated lessons. So there may be a difficult elementary lesson that you find, then another seems more digestible. Let me know if you try it out.

Which town are you living in? It may be something specific to that area. I've heard of Re Ku "Hot Pants" for something like shorts. 

Capris-七分裤

Shorts-短裤, sometimes  can be 热裤.
