Deal. I've always loved writing, but have perhaps lacked the imagination and wit to come up with sufficient fodder for a novel/play/short story (still dreaming, though). You provide the ingredients, Baba can do graphics, and I'll mix it all together. What could possibly go wrong?

Ah, if only this were possible. 我的intellectual pretensions太大了！：）That said (and with all sincerity), if what you say is true, I'm sure I would enjoy it immensely. The pleasure felt when you listen to 'real' Chinese dialogue and actually, you know, 'get it', overrides any inner prejudice I may have. Honest, I'll give it a go just as soon as I get a few hours spare.

Sky TV is the only major digital TV provider in the UK which carries a Chinese language channel (Pheonix TV, or 凤凰卫视), and is full of shows like this. I must admit, I've never bothered to watch beyond the first couple of minutes of any of them, on the basis that they appear a prime example of mawkish McCulture produced by apparatchik zombies who leave the heavy loading of script writing to chimpanzees. However, being an open-minded human being who has nothing at all against soul destroying soap operas, I pledge to give this show a go. Thanks for the tip!

Honest, no 'ranting' perceived. I did detect a feminist perspective, but that's all good. Nowt wrong with an alternative perspective - it's very much welcomed (even if, knowing myself to be a natural-born and obstinate contrarian, the minute an alternative perspective moves into the mainstream, I'll begin disagreeing just for the sake of it:).

Indeed,Baba! That's what got me wondering in the first place. It wasn't commented on at all, which made me wonder whether it was not noticed as a point of potential humour/controversy. I thought that foundation stone of our little tet-a-tet was understood. Ah well, we got there in the end, eh!? Or rather we didn't, but we got to a point where we agreed that it was rollicking good fun to be discussing it!:)

No problem, Rachel. Sounds good to me. I love a good debate, and am - as you can probably surmise - quite opinionated, though I try hard not to resent an opposing point of view (tough sometimes:)) and genuinely respect your opinions and feelings on this issue. I'm sorry you feel uncomfortable, and I wouldn't ever want to make anyone feel hurt or worried or otherwise wierded out. An, yes, at any point that that feeling arises, it pays to get the hell out of there (I've run away from situations that have frightened me on several occasions, literally and figuratively). I guess, by way of a parting (and non-confrontational, I hope) comment, yes, there are plenty of male wierdos and perverts out there who can make the world a scary place for the opposite sex. I'd argue (with a trace of humour, but mostly seriousness) that Shanghai (and many other towns and cities beside) is replete with women who make the mating game an extremely scary proposition for men, too! It's a jungle out there (though not one I've been intimate with for a while, as I am into my seventh year of marriage!). Anyway, you are right. There is no point hammering a point that, in the grand scheme of things, isn't particularly critical anyway! Adieu.

What's going on in this sentence (from the expansion):

这个人看起来感觉不可靠，我不想跟他合作

Why the need to use 看起来 AND 感觉? From an English point of view, it seems like overkill. Both have a similar function within the sentence (ie. to offer an opinion on something that SEEMS to be the case).
