Thanks Connie. Sorry to be a pain, but can you define what 了1 & 了2 mean? Or is there someplace where the different forms are written down for me to take a look at? I couldn't find an actual list on the Qing Wen lessons.

I happened on an old lesson this morning in which the following line was used to mean "there's no other choice" - 别无选择. Can you explain the difference between this and the alternative used in this dialogue - 没有第二个选择?

Building on the recent Qing Wen episodes dealing with '了', can I ask which category of '了' this sentence (from the expansion) falls into: 我已经知道比赛结果了?

I'm guessing it's a '了' for emphasis. Is this right?

Thanks for perserving with those of us who find the whys and wherefores of 'le' eternally puzzling. 

I had what might seem to be a really, really basic question:

Am I right in saying that, when responding to an assertion, the difference between saying, '知道' and '知道了' is the difference between "I know" and "I see". The former is a way of saying "I already knew that" (with the subtext being, "...and you didn't need to remind me"), and the latter a way of saying "Ah, that's new and interesting. Thanks for giving me this new knowledge" (though I guess it might also be used politely when someone says something obvious but you don't want to draw attention to the fact that it was obvious!).

The same distinction could be applied to "明白" and "明白了", I guess. 

Do I have all this right?

Ouch, ouch, ouch. I've used 了 with the verb 住 more times than I could possibly care to remember! However, it does raise a question (which I feel I should know by now)....how to say: "A few years back I lived in Shanghai for six months". My instinct would be: 我几年前住在上海五个月了. Would this count as a ”了一“ or a "了二". Or is it just totally wrong?!?

Small thing, but 行 is pronounced as 'xing' in the audio review.

很有意思，从来不知道“拨”有这个意思 - 还用“拨打电话”这个说法是应为最早的电话是需要“拨”的。最恐怖的事是我还记得那种的电话。太谢谢你了！
