September 13, 2011 at 10:46 AMI see. Thanks....so the following sentence would make sense?
HSK考试落伍了,不通过考试也罢。

September 13, 2011 at 8:12 AMSorry - another quick question about the following sentence (from the Expansion):
我取消了十几张信用卡,只留了一张
I would have expected the last clause to read 只留着一张.
Is it right to say that 我取消了十几张信用卡,只留了一张 = "I cancelled more than 10 credit cards and left only one"
...whereas 我取消了十几张信用卡,只留着一张 = “I cancelled more than 10 credits cards and now there's only one left"?

September 13, 2011 at 8:04 AMAch - I'm sure I have, very recently in fact, used the phrase 今天是什么日子 to ask the date. Ah well, we learn by making such mistakes, I guess (although I don't believe anyone pointed the mistake out to me at the time)!
I had a question about the term 刚好. In the expansion sentence, "今天刚好是我的生日,我升职了", why not place the clauses the other way round and say "我今天升值了,刚好是我的生日". Not only would this seem more intuitive (to the English speaker), it also matches the structure of the following sentence in the expansion (你来得真准时,刚好九点). Are there hard and fast rules we can use to guide where to place the 刚好?

September 9, 2011 at 8:59 AMIs it just me, or was this lesson really, really hard? Even after several runs through the dialogue and taking a good look at the written script, I'm missing a whole lot of meaning. One quick language question. What's the 也罢 doing at the end of the line, "只知道皮毛的不写也罢"? I thought 罢 was an alternative to 而已 - ‘merely’ - though it doesn't seem to work here. Bit confused! Can you help?

September 9, 2011 at 8:04 AMInteresting. Whereabouts are you from Joe? I've never heard of Goose Egg representing zero. However, my heartland (southern England) does not, alas, command English vernacular as perhaps it once did:) [If you now tell me you are from Godalming, Surrey, I'm gonna be seriously embarrassed!]. Nah, honest question: whereabouts in the world does this phrase work?

拨 + 输入 - how are they differently used?
Thanks!
