I think you should check out the vocab review mp3.  It's basically an audio flaschard. First we read the english vocab items, then the Chinese, encouraging you to translate them.  In the second part of the mp3 we read out the expansion sentences, with the english first to help you get used to translating into Chinese.

Good question.  In general, tone change rules are a spoken rule, and don't have to be written down, so although you might say ní hǎo, you would write it nǐ hǎo.

The third tone is kind of special in that it's combination of a downwards tone and a rising tone.  When we say 2 or 3 third tones in a row, it's not that the tones actually changes, but more that different parts of the falling/rising tone are accentuated.  Therefore, saying ni, you emphasise the rishing portion (so it sounds like a second tone) and with the hao you focus on the falling tone.

3rd tones the majority of the time are pronounced as a low falling tone, rather than down up.  Because many teachers emhapsise the need to go down, and then up when you say a third tone, in actual speech, or when combined with other characters, 3rd tone just goes down.  You can read more about this here.

I think we discussed how to pronounce 2 third tones in a row in a recent lesson.  I'll try and find which one it was.

Fair enough.  No one likes spreadsheets ;) I think the idea behind the transcriptions with tal and the eventual PDF trascript is that it encourages users to really practice the lesson and collaborate, not just consume the lesson in one sitting, but to breakdown each and every word.

I think the idea of the transcript is great and it's essential a community project like Wikipedia, so subject to some errors. If we were to publishe the PDF on the site, it would be very clear that it was a user collaborative effort, and open for improvements and changes.  I'm not sure the best way to do it, but maybe we could add an extra tab with an embedded pdf.  Click here to see a quick idea of what i'm talking about.

I've also turned this awesome thread into a shared spreadsheet to test if this is more easy to collaborate and follow. Afterwards we could turn it into an official PDF trrascript? Any ideas for a shared platform that isn't google?
