In this context, 参加 means 'participate' or 'take part in'. 参加 is sometimes translated as 'to attend', but in the context of a 比赛, it means to be a part of the competition. If you wanted to say, 'went and watched', you could use simply 去看. (昨天我去看了田径比赛)

不太 and 太 can actually be followed by a verb. In addition to the above example, you could say, 我太喜欢她, or, 我不太明白你的意思。

The 不太去 is similar to something like 不怎么去 and means, 'don't often go'.

As for why there's no 的, I'm not sure!

Hey light,

出发 is more like 'to set out'. It can mean set out for a battle/an adventure, but also just to set out for the day. For example, 你每天几点出发？ 'What time to do you leave the house every day?'

出去 is a more general word meaning 'to go out'. 你今天晚上要出去吗？

As for adding things to the vocab, I can't really say as it's not a part of my job here. But, as for your other question:

长 has two readings and meanings, one being zhǎng, 'to grow'. The other, cháng, meaning, 'long'. So, when 长 is next to 高 it's an expression meaning 'to grow tall'.

There isn't the verb 'to call' here, but the 太傻 is a part of the 笑他. A more direct translation would be, 'Laughed at him for being so foolish', or 'Laughed at him, thinking he was so foolish.'

Both are OK. Some dictionaries list it as pèifu, some as pèifú. (Personally, I feel like I hear pèifu more often however)

Hey Christine,

In, "It was over. Just because of this he wasn't awarded the 'merit student' status more than a few times." I meant to convey that he was up for the award, but never got it, more than a few times. So, he never got it!

The 好了 is in the sentence before and is translated as, 'It was over'. This 好了 is similar to 完了, meaning something like, 'He was finished'. (after his behavior was marked down in the record)
