January 31, 2010 at 3:29 AMA Chinese friend tells me that 的 in these sentences makes them sound more 'natural', but it's not really needed in 《你们还说过话的呢》。
I was a bit surprised, I thought it was descriptive in the first 2, meaning the 2 things happened, that it was a change in state.
Can we just replce the 的 in these 3 sentences with 了? Let's wait and see what the experts say!

I was thrown by this actually, I guess it's an example of 少 being used as a verb (with the sense of 'lack' or 'be missing') here.

January 25, 2010 at 1:22 PMAbsolutely. Actually in China one normally has several sets of pyjamas on the go. There'll be a really warm pair for colder nights, and then a thinner pair for when the weather warms up a bit. Then there's the nightwear for receiving guests, (bit smarter these ones, with no hint of cleavage for ladies,) and the ones for just slobbing around the house watching TV or playing mahjong. And finally there are the ones just for sleeping in, kept in a vacuum sealed plastic bag until needed.

January 25, 2010 at 4:26 AMMaybe so, but they still stare! You don't have to walk down the street in your underwear to be stared at in (many parts of) China, being of non-Chinese appearance is quite enough!

e.g.
我发电子邮件给他了。Wǒ fā diànzǐ yóujiàn gěi tā le. (I sent him an email.)
后来，他发短信给我了。Hòulái, tā fā duǎnxìn gěi wǒ le. (Later, he sent me a text message.)
现今，发传真的人不多。Xiànjīn, fā chuánzhēn de rén bù duō. (Nowadays, not many people send faxes.)
