why is Chinesepod doing a Chinese media lesson about an American event? why not do a media lesson about the attack that happened at a school in China around the same time when a man walked in and stabbed over a dozen children?

I think the most natural translation of 用过了吗 would be "have you used it before" and 用了吗？ would be "have you used it?" because we wouldn't ask someone in that context "did you use it" in English so I think the distinction (whether the action is completed as a previous experience) is less clear in English than in Chinese (which is why the English present perfect, I have found, can be maddening for Chinese in how to use it). But thanks for the additional explanation.
