The poor translation is a very old problem. You can't shame them to improve. The translation quality ranges from moronic flowery English idioms (in non-fruitful masturbatory attempts by some native English speaker) to incomprehensible nonsense (by low-paid native Chinese intern). There is no policy or guidelines for translation. I wish they adopt the associative memory principle to enhance retention. I believe Chinese native speakers alone can never understand the difficulties of learning Chinese. The only person who understood it was John Pasden, long gone.

There is an existing body of research on grading the lessons based on corpus (frequency, syntax, pragmatics) Use that. Unless the team takes no pride in its job.

什么 here roughly means "some", not "what".

The Chinese native speakers cannot appreciate the issues of L2 learners. Thankfully, Fiona sometimes plays the role of John Pasden but she does not do it often enough. Examples: 不虚此行: In order for the learners to internalize the meaning, you should break down 不虚此行 into 不虚 and 此行, explain the meaning of虚 and 不虚 拜读:Should quote parallels of 拜访,拜会。 恩师:… who I owe my career: You may feel so about your PhD supervisor but that is not the precise meaning 研究方向:should give a couple of examples. Constance saying 方向 is not really 方向 cannot dispense with the need for explaining what 方向 means in this phrase, and giving a few examples.

The dialog section begins with mouthing pleasantries but then veers off to linguistics. To stretch the dialog section to some self-defined duration, the writer often is forced to get two themes into the lesson - which, I personally think, is fine as long as learning takes place. I commend your efforts to create lessons on specialized topics but often the results are clumsy hodgepodge of dialogs which struggle to smuggle in some targeted and, sometimes, arcane vocabulary (eg, 本体语法 ontological grammar whatever that means), often of little practical use for even the advanced learners. I hope these are teething troubles of the team authoring advanced/ upper intermediate lessons. You may get the opinions of more people before finalizing the dialog section.

Appreciate the efforts to research such specialized topics as architecture. I consider the last one-third of the 对话 most significant. Thank you.

I love the topic. Very well written. But not delivered clearly. Constance, please listen to yourself and you may not understand yourself. You really need to speak clearly. Fiona, you may provide English equivalents sometime. Constance, please please speak clearly. You are delivering a lesson after all. Thanks
