I think I'm sticking with my Motorola A1000 (Symbian OS), then upgrade to one of its Linux-based later models, e.g. Motorola A1200. A stylus stick is useful IMO.

I did not say that there will be no iPhone in China. Its just that iPhone does not currently support inputting Chinese characters, although it does display Chinese text in Web pages and email. The reason is because designers like Steve Jobs decided to have no stylus stick for aesthetic reasons, making it impractical to do handwriting recognition for inputting Chinese characters (fingers are too big/fat to write the strokes properly). The other alternative is to use some sort of Pinyin-based input program, but this will be inferior/slower compared to other devices with a stylus. I was considering buying an iPhone until I found out this limitation (because I need to write Chinese emails). Maybe iPhone version 2.

As far as I know, there is no plan to support Chinese character input for the iPhone. So I guess this phone will be quite irrelevant in China.

How come the dialog pronounces 那 as nèi rather than nà as in the transcript ? Furthermore, I'm always confused about how to describe discounts. How would one say 80% off? Is it 打二折 ? How about 5% off? Why is half price not 打五折 ? Finally, why is it necessary to even ask anyone to get a pack of condoms? Isn't it far easier to just get them from the supermarket and pay up at the cashier no questions asked? Since Ken mentioned it at the end of the dialog, what are the other ways of saying condoms?

harrym, I guess this is what they mean by 中国特色的社会主义。 In other words, capitalism at its worst. But as long as consumers in the West want to pay the lowest possible price for their products, no one cares about poor workers in 3rd world country. We live on a miserable planet, life sucks for most people. :(

Hi harrym, Thanks for the conversion web site. Its exactly what I need. Unfortunately I can't use the MS Word tip, because I use Open Office and KOffice, which have slightly different ways of entering symbols. Thanks anyway for your reply.

I heard of three different ways of asking for someone's name. 1. 你叫什么名字？ 2. 你贵姓? 3. 怎么称呼? I think they can all be used in the same context, but there may be subtle differences. Anyone know if there are differences? Another question : How do I type in pinyin characters with the tones?
