hi RoninDC, Yes, 烧 (shāo) is used to describe cooking: 烧饭 shāofàn. It's the same 烧 (shāo) as in 烧火 (shāohuǒ) 'to light a fire'. Because most cooking was done over a fire, the term was coined. Now it can be used in general to describe any cooking, not just that over a fire.

hi Kyle and goulniky, These kinds of questions are often hard to answer, because there is rarely an exact equivalent! But, for 'smart ass' you could say: 他是一个自以为是的人 Tā shì yī ge zìyǐwéishì de rén

Yes, although there are more bicycles on the road in Shanghai, I find it much safer than Taipei. Taipei is like a free for all. The traffic wardens in Shanghai are pretty strict about the rules. In Taiwan, anything goes. Both have their advantages.

hi mora, The most common way to ask for someone to answer the phone would be: 谁能接一下电话? Shéi néng jiē yīxià diànhuà? Who can answer the phone? 接一下电话。 Jiē yīxià diànhuà. Answer the phone You don't have to use a measure word when talking about phone calls... its optional. 个 (ge) and 通 (tōng) are both acceptable measure words for phone calls. 你有(一个)电话。 Nǐ yǒu (yī ge) diànhuà. You have a call. 有三个电话找你。 Yǒu sān ge diànhuà zhǎo nǐ. There were three calls for you. 一通电话 yī tōng diànhuà

hi lunetta, haha... if you'd ever had baijiu you would understand. It tastes like bandaids. But, that may be because the stuff I tried was the cheap one they sell in the convenience store for a few kuai. Ew... bad memories.
