October 19, 2007 at 6:15 AMHannahlm, Bob and Doug Mackenzie are a Canadian cultural claim to fame (shame, some might say, hehe). They were a couple of beer-swilling characters from a TV show back in the 80's. They were pretty good for a laugh though.

October 17, 2007 at 8:59 AMhi taibeitimes, Yes, the difference is very slight. You would use the 是...的 (shì...de) construction in a situation where the point of the sentence was the time. Like, in the above example, maybe the person is late, and you want to clarify what time it was that he should have arrived. That sort of feeling.

October 17, 2007 at 6:15 AMhi henning, In this case, the 他人 (tā rén) is actually separate, as in 他+人 (tā rén), so it isn't the usage that means 'others', but rather literally: 'he that person...'

October 19, 2007 at 7:55 AMhi henning, Yes, using the 搞 (gǎo) is more colloquial. Actually, the 搞 (gǎo) can be left out as well, because 促销 (cùxiāo) can be used either as a noun or a verb. So you could also say: 最近很多笔记本电脑都在促销。 Zuìjìn hěn duō bǐjìběn diànnǎo dōu zài cùxiāo. Your use of the 是...的 (shì...de) construction here: 最近很多笔记本电脑都是促销的。 Zuìjìn hěn duō bǐjìběn diànnǎo dōu shì cùxiāo de. is not incorrect, but it wouldn't likely be used for this type of a sentence, it doesn't sound as natural.
