October 22, 2007 at 9:58 AMHi Christian, Hmm, that's an interesting one. Well, for one thing, you can call a one-eyed monster: 独眼龙 Dúyǎnlóng Actually, you would know from the context whether one was speaking of two eyes or one in Chinese. However, if you wanted to get more specific about one of your eyes, you could say: 左眼不大 (Zuǒyǎn bù dà) left eye is not big 右眼不大 (Yòuyǎn bù dà) right eye is not big

October 22, 2007 at 6:23 AMhi sparechange, 训练 (xùnliàn) - to train 练 (liàn) - to practice But, yes, you could use them both to mean to practice, but 训练 (xùnliàn) is more formal.

October 22, 2007 at 6:11 AMyes, great idea for a Dear Amber. I, too, have been a victim of spit gone bad (i'm sure it was an accident). I'll have to find some experts to enlighten us!

October 22, 2007 at 4:18 AMhi davelandis, yes, you're right... will have that sentence translation amended. Thanks for pointing that out. arne1985, 拐 (guǎi) and 转 (zhuǎn) both mean turn, and could be used in either context. I find that 拐 (guǎi) is more commonly used in Shanghai, whereas they always say 转 (zhuǎn) in Taiwan. So it could be according to regional customs as well.

October 24, 2007 at 2:11 AMgoulniky, Yes, I agree. Those silent bikes are like silent killers. A good warning for all pedestrian travellers. That, and also--pedestrians do not ever have the right of way here. Keep your eyes open at all times. We want all our poddies to survive their trips to China!
