September 26, 2007 at 5:31 AMhi Lantian, 其他 (qítā) isn't particularly for written Chinese. It is used pretty much interchangeably with 别的 (biéde). The meaning of your sentence is different than the one in the dialogue. Your sentence: 不想别的班里(的)男生 (Bù xiǎng bié de bān lǐ(de)nánshēng) means: Not like the boys in the other classes. as opposed to: 不像班里的其他男生 (Bù xiàng bān lǐ de qítā nánshēng) Not like the other boys in the class.

September 25, 2007 at 11:21 PMHi Bazza, Yes, I should learn from this to never make blanket statements, but the overwhelming sentiment of our teachers here is that if Chinese people ever do say 你好吗, it is due to influence from other languages, or that they are picking that up from foreigners. They still tell me that in Chinese, to say 你好吗 is odd to them. So... there you have it.

September 25, 2007 at 8:17 AMHi Bazza, If Connie said 同事好 (tóngshì hǎo) to me when I arrived at work, it would feel way too formal. It's not used much, except in very formal address, such as: 各位同事们，大家好。 Gèwèi tóngshì men, dàjiā hǎo. For your workmates, 你好 is just fine.

September 25, 2007 at 8:13 AMhi pakua2004, 八卦 (bāguà) has both of those meanings. I don't think you have to be concerned, definitely from the context everyone will know whether you are talking about gossip, or the Ching eight diagrams. Two extremely different subjects!!

September 25, 2007 at 7:48 AMHi Nelfie, Chinese is a lot more flexible. The 在 (zài) in the first sentence: 他们在笑什么? Tāmen zài xiào shénme? What are they laughing at? Is the 在 (zài) that denotes that an action is happening now. The second sentence basically has the same meaning, but it's the context that tells us the complete meaning. So, in Chinese, much is inferred from context. 笑什么? Xiào shénme? What are (you) laughing at?
