Posted on: The Non-Chinese Speaking Tourist and Toilets
January 11, 2008 at 9:10 AMAmber, You guys forgot to mention the star-ratings for toilets found in Chinese tourist spots. I think the facilities in the Forbidden City are rated four stars.

January 11, 2008 at 8:51 AMI didn't know that 马桶 is toilet. How does this word differ from 厕所 or 洗手间?

January 10, 2008 at 12:35 AMThe guy in this lesson got mad enough to miss an afternoon's worth of work. Since the lesson is based on a true story, which Cpod staff person skipped work? :)

January 7, 2008 at 10:51 AMAmber, In the lesson on Singapore, you mentioned these four words: resultative complement verb structure. When I first saw these words, 我念不出来。They were a mouthful. :) Should verbal diarrhea be translated as 口头腹泻?

Posted on: Trip to the Chinese Doctor and a Special Guest
January 4, 2008 at 8:26 AMWhen I was in Shanghai, our tour group's operator forced us to go to a Chinese "Medical Institute" where we met a bunch of snake-oil salesmen who diagnosed almost everyone with various ailments to convince them to buy Chinese medicine. The "head doctor" didn't even bother to get his underlings to diagnose me after talking to me for a few seconds. I guess I didn't have the face of dollar signs. :-) But the rest of the tour group did get diagnosed and received the sales pitch. Some got mad and some bought Chinese medicine.

January 3, 2008 at 7:54 PMDid anyone video-recorded the Cpod gang singing ABBA songs? ABBA is popular in China? What's the next karaoke adventure for the Cpod Gang? The Bee Gees? ;-)

January 3, 2008 at 5:29 AMRegarding the slang 泡妞, how does the word 泡 as in 泡茶 (make tea) become womanizing when combined with 妞?

January 11, 2008 at 10:18 AMTerrific lesson. I didn't know that 戏 also means drama or luck. I only know about 游戏 (to play). 破财 made me think of 破产 (go broke, zhongwen.com is so handy). I grew up hearing 破产 mentioned a lot in my dialect. 真倒霉,破财了, 没脑子 and 没戏了 are short words that I can use when typing short instant messages with my Chinese friends. Given the right context, these words can be silly and funny during a conversation. Keep up the good work.
