Eileen, You pronounced Villanueva the way we were taught in the Philippines. I prefer that pronunciation. Art

色眯眯, now I never learned these words when I took my three university-taught Mandarin courses. Then again, I also didn't learn how to say 放屁 and 忍者。 How about a lesson on mathematical terms? I stumbled into 系数 (coefficient) after listening to yesterday's Qingwen because I mistook xi for xu when Connie said 序数 (ordinal number) when I looked up 序数 using the wrong pinyin. Maybe John can write a fictional drama that plays out a "catfight" between two Mathematicians vying for the Nobel Prize for Mathematics (no such prize doesn't exist).

One of the things that I really like about Qingwen is listening to Connie give out the usage rules in Mandarin. They're clear and simple enough for me to write down. Writing Chinese characters helps me remember words. If I don't recognize the words Connie say and therefore can't write them down, I search the online dictionaries. The new words I learned from this lesson are 序数 xu4shu4 and 单独 dan1du2。 Now Amber, I know of another reason why one has to say 二 instead of 两 when expressing the number two. Imagine you are the Chinese version of Sesame Street's Count Von Count and try saying the following: 二, 二, hahahahaha (thunder and lightning in the background) 两, 两, hahahahaha (thunder and lightning in the background) 二 sounds better than 两 in this case. Since you made Connie sing 两只老虎,can you humor us and do an impression of Count Von Count counting the number two in Mandarin? 漂亮请? :-) 886, Art

Golly, if it wasn't for this lesson, I would have forgotten that 二百五 is 250. I've lived in the U.S. too long and automatically thought that it's 205. My brother, who heard the lesson, had to remind me that it's 250 when we say 二百五 in Hokkien. He also reminded me that 一千五 in Hokkien is 1500. Art

The dubbed scene where that French dude said: 你以为我放去。。。 Didn't 放 sound more like huang instead of fang?

Jenny, I think all Chinese including the 华裔 inherited the 5000 year tradition of not saying I love you to family members. And you're right, it's all about action when showing love. Chinese like love as a verb while Westerners like love as a noun. Amber, There can never be a Chinesepod ripoff or imitation. Jenny is unique and she can't be cloned. I also can't imagine anyone out there duplicating a Dear Amber show. Art

Amber's cobweb clue and Jenny's tribe hint were good google keywords. I've always thought that Indy Jones spoke Cantonese in the Temple of Doom movie. I need to get my hearing checked! I can differentiate between Mandarin and Cantonese. :-)
