I'm assuming that Connie is the youngest among the Qingwen trio. So has anyone addressed Connie as xiao cheng?

Amber, forget about writing Connie in to your version of Dukes of Hazzard. You and Connie should come up with your own version of Thelma and Louise! :)

Amber,

You should talk to your Chinese friend again about the theory of Western women aging faster than their Chinese peers. I thought it was the Chinese women's use of pearl cream that "slowed" their aging process, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaD_fvehAaU.

:-)

I still have a tough time believing that people in Asia enjoy listening to Jackie Chan sing. Then again, if David Hasseloff can have a singing career in Europe, why can't Jackie Chan do the same in Asia?

The retirement communities here in the States have very strict rules about guests. Residents have to inform management that they're having their young grandkids over for a very brief stay. Young kids are not allowed to stay longer. I think that these retired folks are missing out on interacting with the younger generation by opting to stay behind gated retirement communities and keep others at a distance. So maybe, in this case, the Chinese can say that the old folks are 可怜。

As for social security system here in the US, there is no guarantee that it will stay solvent for future retirees. So many here don't save at all and think that social security will take care of them. Inflation will cut down the purchasing power and if there are fewer younger people working to pay for the pension of a large base of retirees, something's going to give.

When I first heard the dialogue, I immediately translated 木杆 to wood. So I was surprised to hear Ken translate it to driver. Then I thought about it and realized that the guy was about to tee off, so there was no need to say 一号木杆 to specify the driver.

Credit card companies will probably not make money off Chinese consumers. Many credit card companies here in the US will entice many consumers to get their card with some terrific deals up front.

The Chinese will know which credit card company offer the best terms, transfer balances from one credit card company to the new one, and draw the benefit. They know the math pretty well. One of my Chinese friends plays this game a lot. He and his other mainland friends here in the U.S. tip each other off on the best credit card deals.

Not all emigrants of Chinese descent to the west  are wealthy. I think Vancouver attracted many wealthy people from Hong Kong in the 80s and 90s. So they can afford to buy very nice homes after emigrating to Vancouver.

I would not be surprised if the enterprising Chinese start carving ads in the Gobi desert. :)
