I already promised myself to never, ever again put one foot in or near a chinese hospital - well, my resolution holds more firmly than ever.

Specially in case of hemorrhoid. :oD

light 487,

I think you can start by forgetting all the "please"s in your sentences ! It makes everything clearer and you don't really need them in China...

"发票" or "要发票" is way enough to get a receipt and chinese people don't often say much. Not impolite but just cultural, I guess. Same in restaurants, if you say "打包" ,pack the food, it's enough !

good luck in here :o)

Thank guys so much for all the answers about 了 !

I've been reading carefully many times but there's still a thick fog around that cute little character.

I guess, as usual, the best is just to remind sentences and examples and their context in order to identify them in spoken chinese and, maybe, if God allows it so, one day far ahead, use them !

But anyway, a little bit of theory and grammar always helps a lot as long as no one gets lost forever in there.

As I retain it, very simplified :

verb 了 = 了 is one part of the verb. says:action finished

sentence 了 = 了 is more idenpendant, and versatile. says:action in progress or many other things

Thanks :o)

Ok,

something that has been troubling me (lightly though) for ages :

你指出了很重要的问题。

why on earth not :

你指出很重要的问题了.

Excellent lesson as usual !

In order to try to clarifie the differences between 了解 and 理解, could we say :

- use 了解 in a situation that existed long before now.

- use 理解 in a situation that is quite momentary or new or linked to a precise cause.

???

Hi Pearltowerpete,

Thanks for your answer. And good to have a real equivalent to "my company let me go" (allowed me, on my request) !

Question :

in "我的公司让我来中国工作" is there any way to say it with less ambiguity, not using 让 ?

I can't think of anything so far.

Or maybe someone will tell me that in this case, there is NO ambiguity.....
