February 24, 2012 at 10:10 AMThey are similar, but definitely not the same. Also note that the i in ri is a different sound than the i in sounds like yi,pi,li ect. I used to say several words incorrectly until it was pointed out to me. For example, I was saying 颜色 yánsè as yánsì and 厕所 cèsuǒ as cìsuǒ. If it's difficult for you to hear the difference, the pinyin chard might be helpful.

Focus on the differences in si/se, ci/ce, ri/re, and zi/ze
The difference in tongue placement for me is that the tongue stays near the roof of my mouth for the si,ci,ri,zi and drops a bit and back when I say se/re/ce/ze. Take that with a grain of salt though as I'm not a native speaker.
