June 20, 2009 at 6:02 AMI have to say, it's the first hungry traveler I liked! Informative, interesting and with real-life way of speaking. Because Mandaring is not always standard* (if you live in the south, you understand).
The other thing...baijiu - yuck! the most poetic description of it is "smells like vomit with strawberry", but that's to me. honestly, I don't like drinking, maybe that's another reason why:))
*8 cases out of 10. Well spoken Standard Mandarin (by a native speaker) seems like somewhat a sign of a status!

June 16, 2009 at 3:57 AMThanks for an awesome dialog...actually over here we always yell at the delivery service. cause they stop at the middle of the campus and don't want to come to the dorm. The best way to say: "你经理的电话号码是多少？*”。 somewhat they react very fast to this one.
And - the dialog was awesome, Cpod even caught such little detail as the music on the mobile phone, before the person picks up:)

June 13, 2009 at 3:38 PMThis little lesson makes me smile. Long time ago, I learned 您贵姓。。。but I forgotten. That was my first year of learning Chinese. 2 years later, when working as an interpreter I heard this question from one of the Chinese businessman for the first time in my live not from a textbook, but from real person! And I had problems with answering, that's called 真丢脸，真丢脸*!
我姓李**,叫吉***。
*zhen1diu1lian3 - really loose face (literally)
** this character is li2
this character is ji2, but in our local Hangzhou dialect it's jie2 :))
