I wonder why Vladmir Putin is so cheered by the Chinese. It's even worse during the Olympics. The Greeks came up with them to overcome their differences every four years, ceasing war hostilities to play the games.

Coubertain expanded the concept to include the entire world, hoping people everywhere would share the games' message of peace.

Now a war broke up between Georgia and Russia, but despite the heavy civilian casualties Putin refuses to agree on a cease-fire. If I was in Beijing I would only cheer Koby Briant.

John,

So you've never heard "high testosterone voice" before? Don't you remember MM 13? Amber has even suggested a recording of your voice as the prize back then...

I'm glad you took no offence by this comment. If you don't remember your voice being described as "testosterone high" before, it does sound a bit strange to be addressed by a stranger like that.

how could I address my neighbour, for, say, "your dog pissed on my lawn", or "could you give me a cup of flour?" Neighbours of the same age call themselves 比邻 bi3 lin2?

off topic

John, don't feel left out, I would like to hear your high testosterone voice with JP's pedant's voice, it would be a fun dialogue.

why i'm afraid of linux

A guy at work has linux running on his desktop, but he can't input special characters and markers, like "ç" and "ã". Does linux run well with chinese characters?

I wonder how long will it take for Pyongyang to be featured...

This lesson reminds me of the Seoul Olympics. I was just a young schoolboy then and it was very funny for me that the pronounciation of Seoul sounded like the spelling of a bad word in portuguese. It's a bit like "Uruguay" sounds funny to Homer Simpson. 汉城 sounds much better in portuguese.

the 00s (zeros), it really sounds strange in english. It may be less so strange we say the 2Ks. How do you adress the 2Ks in chinese? 零 零年代 ling2 ling2 nian2 dai4? or  两千年代 liang3 qian1 nian2 dai4?

is coffee a good gift? my mom may be spending some time in a Chinese college, I think her fellow students could make a good use of some caffeine. my problem is choosing a Brazilian brand of coffee. I see some gourmet coffees in the supermarket which seem good, but are expensive and I never bought them. There are cheap ones, but I don't like them. Actually I only buy Melitta, which is both affordable and good flavored, but German. Would Chinese people mind that?

I think even the most naive westerner wouldn't ask the refund for a ten year old microwave oven. it's amazing, however, how long those ovens last. My mom's is already fifteen. may I say: 心修吗?我心碎了 Xīn xiū ma? Wǒ xīnsuì le! if it is a pretty girl fixing things? can that be a line?

this movie madness has a deeper emotional value for me, I introduced it to a friend as I was taking her to the airport. it was a bittersweet goodbye and the audio clip made it less awkward. we couldn't guess it, anyway

this lesson could be coupled with a Paris themed movie madness. some many good hollywood movies about paris (not so many french movies). we could hear Maurice Chevalier singing in the Bois de Bologne, for instance... anyone remember that movie?
