leslie Have you seen that Jim Carey movie, about Andy Kauffman, Man on the moon? At some point Andy goes to a "spiritual" spa, and he asks a swami what is the key to humor, the answer: silence. I can imagine now some guy in New York teaching stand up comedy, saying that the word humor comes from Chinese 幽默 and implies silence.

I don't think Ken hates Yang Jie particularly, he hates every character. I like his grumpy remarks, also the funniest lessons were those not so pretty. My favorite still is "Your turn to pay".

henning, it seems your own untested theory is not only yours. did you watch "angel eyes", a Jim Caviezel (probably misspelled) and Jeniffer Lopez movie. Jim explains a theory very much similar to yours. i think Jenny would also like this theory. one lesson sometime ago she said she'd rather have 丑 (chou3) than 臭 (chou4).

this movie is very good, if it is the one I think. Henning and Lunetta must probably have guessed before I did. They're so clever and quick, maybe a better prize would be the right to choose next week's movie madness. It's better than Dave's love, anyway...

I don't like small cups, that's why I like to drink 巴拉圭冬青 (bā lā gūi dōng qīng). Is it possible to find erva-mate in China? I was supprised to see a lengthy article in wikipedia in Chinese. If there is erva-mate in China, is it enough to say 巴拉圭冬青? Is it better to say 巴拉圭冬青茶?

I did not get tucsonmichaels comment at first, when he talked about "interesting characters" I thought it was about han zi... then I started to look for 杨洁 on the transcript, I did not remmember it was Yang Jie. The transcript could have the other characters' characters on the supplementary vocab, like Yang Jie. She's the only one I like, though. Wang Wei reminds me to much of myself and Li Yan is a dull girl playing the fool. If she had the slightest self-respect and stopped harrassing Wang Wei I could empathise with her. I think Jenny hates Li Yan and she reflects herself in Yang Jie (her former self, perhapps). She always talks comtemptuosly about Li Yan, "the goody two shoes". I think it will all go wrong, for everybody, because it is just how things turn out when we're young. But I have high hopes for Yang Jie. She'll learn to apreciate studying, abandon her Hello Kitty cloths and become a web-based Chinese teatcher. The story was weak, but the lesson was great.

I never got diarrhea by eating ice cream, perhaps my tonsils got sorrow, that was what mom used to tell me, anyway. I heard a Chinese woman say she could not drink soda because one should avoid cold drinks during the period. Where I live it is never cold, but traditional food here is hot spicy shrimp soup. When I eat it I sweat like pig, but no problem. Ironically people here have a issue with my hot tea. I like drinking hot tea in a warm day. I think the tea's extra hydration enables you to endure long hot day.

I have a question about where to put "的 de" in the sentence. When John explained why one says "别听他的 biè tīng tā de" instead of "别听他 biè tīng tā" Jenny added "别听他说的 biè tīng tā shuō de", where the 的 comes after the 说. Later John gave an example "别听他的话 biè tīng tā de huà", where de comes before the 话. i don't get how to correctly place the 的 in the sentence.
