November 24, 2010 at 7:18 PMWhen my wife and I were in China last May, I don't recall either seeing a person walking with a white cane, or someone with a "seeing eye dog."
What kind of aids are there in China for the blind, or visually handicapped.
As most of you may know, here in the US, handicapped access is required by law for all businesses, and public buildings.
One recent and cool innovation is to have sound enabled pedestrian cross walks. They make a sound when a blind person can cross, and have a count down clicking as an audible guide much like the visible seconds, 10,9,8,.. count down.
When I was doing graduate mathematics studies, there was a blind student in a few of my classes. She was quite good, and could purchase the required text books in brail.
On the other hand, we've more than our share of beggars who are for the most part veterans of the Vietnam war, and homeless people. It's a real disgrace for such a wealthy country.

November 20, 2010 at 5:00 PMI've always liked that we sum up our week of studying 中文with 请问. 为什么？In the end to really speak and feel a language one needs help in learning the subtlties, the nuances. The 请问队 does this so well.
