April 18, 2011 at 2:09 PMhaha when she was talking to her German friend in the States via skype, somehow she said "water" but with a more British pronunciation, and then I had to say "water" with the American retroflex r until her friend understood.
So her friend may have learned to say z like "zed" but she transferred to the school of "zee" ;)
anyway, I put up the link to my speech competition!

April 18, 2011 at 6:57 AMI used to have to call this letter: "Z", "zed" to my German co-worker, because if I were to call it the American way, she would mistake it for "C"

April 11, 2011 at 6:29 AMKTV!
You get pronunciation and reading practice. The downside is no tones, and Chinese songs tend to repeat the same vocabulary. 愛情,永遠,願意,溫柔,etc. So maybe it it's not the most effective method of learning, but I enjoy it!
I used to study the characters for hours at the expense of my speaking and listening. There was a point where if I didn't know how to write it, I didn't know how to say it. but after I went to China, spoke Chinese every day, and my speaking got better, my reading speed also increased. Of course, I used to get headaches from speaking Chinese for prolonged periods of time, but not anymore.
My rigorous study of characters did pay off, and it instilled all those radicals in my brain pretty well. Often times, I could see a character that I didn't know on a sign, wait until I got home to look it up, and I wouldn't forget how to write it. After writing a character over and over, you also get muscle memory in your hand. Of course you can easily lose it if you don't keep it up.

March 26, 2011 at 11:47 PMI thought it was a bit unrealistic in this dialogue to have a woman call a young man, ”帥shuài哥gē“, since for every Chinese woman who called me that, there were at least 20 Chinese guys who did the same.

March 20, 2011 at 6:38 AMI remember when I had to recharge, I would just go to the China Mobile (中国移动)store, write down my phone number on a list, and then give them the money. I didn't even know about this whole business with the 15 digit number!

May 16, 2011 at 4:28 AMI had to chuckle a bit when I would hear Chinese speaking English telling me about local "countries" when they meant to say "counties"
