Something tells me that if you like these characters that are not common, except in proper names, that you are the type to like random facts too. just a hunch.

and then, there are the characters used for foreign transliterations. Kind of reminds me of how the Japanese have an alphabet for foreign loan words.

I only learned that character "斌 " because it was in some friends' names. I've never seen it in words before, not that I'm such a Chinese expert that if *I* haven't seen it, it must be a practically useless character.

Hi, I just want to say that the traditional character in the dialogue for 週末 is wrong.  周 is the surname and 週 means week.

my German co-worker in China HATED when the student would say, "Hello teacher," and salute her like the Nazis saluted Hitler. The 保安 used to make fun of the students saluting her, and she didn't like that very much -___-

我小時候學過法語，但是我都忘了。我想學意大利語，因為在中國認識一些意大回來的中國人。

我也學過韓語，但是我發現了，同時學兩個東亞語言這麼複雜，真的受不了。

I found that in China I did understand people whose voices I was used to better than strangers. I remember at a restaurant when the waitress was saying something, and my friend repeated EXACTLY what she said, and I magically understood his "translation".

Anyway, I never understood how everyone is ok with the fact that Europe speaks many languages, but then expect an area with a population greater than Europe to not only speak the same language, but with the same accent.
