May 17, 2012 at 1:21 PMI think one reason John is able to explain Mandarin so well is because he can explain in English is an professional and concise manner. If one doesn't understand his own language, it can be difficult to master another one.

May 15, 2012 at 7:25 AMJohn points out that 身边 is commonly used in Mandarin, but that we wouldn't say this in English. I've found that words like 身边, 参加, 热闹等等 are ones that I should use more when speaking but would rarely use in an English context. For example, I often hear the phrase 参加聚会, but I don't think I say it much.

May 15, 2012 at 6:06 AMIt sounds like a NASCAR track out there. It's interesting that 停 was not used in this dialogue. To be honest, I don't think I would use it as much as 车位 or 停车场.

May 15, 2012 at 6:03 AMShe could be talking to a parking lot (car park) attendant. It could still make sense to address him as 师傅.
