You can say “这件不好看” instead of “这个不好看”. I think "这个" is more commonly used than "这件" in this case.

P/S. "什么苦都没吃过" and "什么苦没吃过" are two different things. The same is true for "什么都不知道" and "什么不知道".

"什么+不/没 (without a question mark)" is one of typical usages of "什么". Here are some examples shown in my Chinese dictionaries.
什么不知道,昨天我还提醒你来着!
Don't tell me you don't know (= you are sure to know).
Didn't I tell you that yesterday?
A: 我不懂!
I don't know.
B: 什么不懂,装糊涂就是了!
Don't tell me you don't know (= you're sure to know).
You are just pretending you don't know.

November 23, 2009 at 8:12 AMAs someone said, there is no official standard for radical classification used in dictionaries. It slightly varies from dictionary to dictionary. For example, "高" is not regarded as a radical anymore in some dictionaries because there are only a few 高-radical characters, and "高" falls into the group of characters that have a radical "亠 ". In the traditional classification, there are 214 radicals in total, including "高".

Congratulations! You've finally got a paper Chinese dictionary. Is that good?
my paper dictionary had at least one or two of the radicals numbered differently to the radicals in mdbg.

"什么苦没吃过" doesn't mean (or not necessarily implies) "I have never suffered before I ran off to Guangzhou". The Chinese sentence simply means "I suffered very much (in Guangzhou)" by using a rhetorical/ironical expression. So the English translation in the dialogue section is very close to the way the Chinese sentence is written.

November 22, 2009 at 3:22 PMWe learners of Mandarin usually only use a word dictionary (词典) and basically have no need to use a character dictionary (字典), but before the first half of the 20th century almost all the dictionaries used in China were character dictionaries (字典), which only show Chinese characters (= single-character words) but don't show multi-character words such as "汉语" and "字典".

November 22, 2009 at 12:57 PM我记得小时候看过的恐龙图鉴里经常出现“雷龙”,不过这个称呼好像已经过时了。据说现在恐龙研究专家一般不用“雷龙”(brontosaurus)而用“迷惑龙”(apatosaurus). 可是,如果雷龙和迷惑龙搏斗的话,哪个会赢呢?“迷惑龙”这个名字听起来不太勇猛啊!
