The phrase "娘娘腔", which carries negative connotation, is used when talking about a sissy/womanish man.

By the same token, you can say "打麻将" (ma2jiang4, play mahjong) and "打扑克" (pu1ke4, play cards).

but economically speaking, to kill such a useful animal seems stupid.
This is the very reason the cow was the most valuable sacrificial animal in ancient China. Furthermore, breeding cows is not so easy compared with sheep, pigs and dogs that were also killed for rituals in ancient society. So cows were used only for important rituals in those days. On the other hand, horses were basically not killed for rituals in ancient China, and they were mainly used for battle chariots.

November 25, 2009 at 7:11 AMThe etymology of "囚", a man trapped in a cage, is simple/obvious and "human". On the other hand, "牢" is a very "animal" character, which also dates back to oracle bone scripts and originally indicated "cows inside an enclosure" ( 宀 + 牛).
There were a few similar oracle bone scripts such as "sheep inside an enclosure" ( 宀 + 羊) and "horses inside an enclosure" ( 宀 + 马), and only "牢" survived. I guess that is because "cow" was the most important sacrificial animal in ancient China.
