“瓶” is a measure word for an amount of liquid in a bottle, as you expected.
一瓶啤酒 a bottle of beer
一个瓶子 a (empty) bottles
一杯咖啡 a cup of coffee
一个杯子 a cup
墙上的十个绿色瓶子。(or 挂在墙上的十个绿色瓶子)
10 green bottles sitting on a wall

In the case of 好汉, the 汉 means "a man". Of course, "a man" virtually meant "a Chinese man (汉族男人)" in China in ancient times.
不到长城非好汉。
He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man.

July 25, 2009 at 2:23 AMI bought a small "量词用法词典" (measure words usage dictionary) the other day. Guys, don't worry. Learning Chinese measure words is not difficult. There are ONLY 600 measure words listed in the dictionary, hehe.

You can say both "你是医生吗？" and "你是大夫吗？". 大夫 is more colloquial (and traditional) than 医生. For the record, 大夫 was pronounced as "da4 fu", not "dai4 fu", in the past, and 大夫 (da4fu) also indicated "senior officials" in feudal China.

Adding the sound “儿”, which is calle "儿化", makes words more conversational. As raygo explained, 儿化 doesn't change the meaning of words. The same is true for 一点/一点儿, 有点/有点儿, 一会/一会儿, and 一边/一边儿, for example.
