The authentic reading of "血汗钱" is "xue4 han4 qian2", but the guy in the dialogue pronounced it "xue3 han4 qian2", which is very understandable since "" is a multi-reading character that has two sounds, i.e. "xie3" and "xue4". The former is more conversational than the latter.

Native speakers, doctors included, sometimes even make it "xue3" or "xie4", of course, you can't find them in any dictionary. But don't worry, you can make yourself understood in any case. Thankfully, native Chinese seem to be very flexible about the pronunciations of the character "".

Hi lydia1981,

Hi helenren,

Thanks for your support.

I admit that Chinese sayings are really worth studying. I love them better than chengyu, because they are always humorous, ironical, and to-the-point.

Furthermore, Chinese sayings are also worth reading from a grammatical standpoint. By the way, I invented a new version of the saying. I hope you like it.

我喝过的比你喝过的还多。
wo3 he1 guo4 de jiu3 bi3 ni3 he1 guo4 de shui3 hai2 duo1.

我吃过的比你吃过的还多。

Quantity-wise, this saying doesn't seem to make sense. Even my chubby dog has eaten more rice than I have salt, hehe. I think the right one should be ....

Hi shalmaneser,

Thanks for interesting examples. As John said above, dictionaries sometimes don't keep up with conversational language.

In Mandarin, for instance, 卑鄙 (bei1 bi3) is often pronounced as "bei1 bi4", which is a well known example of this kind.

As for "下载", to make matters even more confusing, "" is a multi-reading character (多音字). (zai4) means "carry, lade", and (zai3) "record, write down".

For the record, "上载" (shang4 zai4) is translated as "upload (goods or cargo)" in a dictionary. And "upload" as an Internet term is "上传" (shang4 chuan2) in Mandarin.

Actually, I still don't know which pronunciation HSK examinees should stick to, "xia4 zai3" or "xia4 zai4", hehe.
