December 20, 2007 at 12:33 PMHi henry123! 你关于中美高等教育制度的帖子非常有意思。 我有时开玩笑说各国人都根本没有任何不同， 一般都有两颗眼睛而且谁都谋求自己的幸福。 尽管那样这种说法还是让我感觉到有点伪善。 如果各国人都一样有些文化人类学者会失业。 反正我们平凡人都只不过是社会制度的产物。 你在什么环境下成长就培养出什么思想习惯。 既然中美社会文化之间存在着很明显的差异， 我就不敢轻易接受双方学生没有差异的假设。 如你说的那样中韩日大学的病根会在于制度， 但学生即使没罪可是必要意识到彼此的差异。 无论是哪个国家用功的学生都认真努力学习， 但关键就在同学们如何对待学问研究的态度。 什么样的制度培养什么样的人才这个说法对， 但反过来说什么样的人才建立什么样的制度。

December 19, 2007 at 9:02 AMHi gavintgh, 像你说的那样高考根源确实在于科举制度。 据说是这个古代录用制度由中国传到欧洲 之后西方社会也逐渐开始了建立类似制度。 可惜的是这个登龙门也有些后门或者漏洞， 也就是说原本叫捐官制度的所谓买官卖官。 只要捐钱就能当官必然容易导致腐败堕落。 这个陋习不禁使我联想起当代的自费大学。 我认为这种招生方式有好处也有坏处但是 只要交钱就能上大学还是有点像捐官制度。

It should be linguistically interesting to study those words and their etymologies, but I am afraid it is totally beyond my competence. Would you like to give it a try? By the way, let me show you some of my favorite Chinese sayings, which I think may be somewhat offensive to women. “男人有钱就会变坏，女人变坏就会有钱”, and “家里红旗(wife)不倒，外面彩旗(mistress)飘飘“, both of which beautifully represent some aspects of our lives.

December 19, 2007 at 3:28 AMThank you, John. Today’s “English lesson” was much more useful to me than Chinese one. Gee, I didn’t know the difference between “sleep late” and “go to sleep late” until this morning. Learning at ChinesePod is really 一举两得 for non-native English speakers just like me. In Japan, a person who stays up late is commonly called “nighthawk (夜鹰, yotaka)”, not owl or 夜猫子. I hear that both a night owl and a nighthawk mean such a nocturnal person in English. Japanese 夜鹰 is not a translation from English. It originally meant a prostitute.

December 18, 2007 at 8:43 AM在我眼里中国韩国的学生比日本的用功。 我以为其最大的原因可能在于科举制度。 古代日本人一直向中国朝鲜等邻邦学习。 尤其是中国律令制度对日本的贡献极大。 但是我们祖先没有引进科举和宦官制度。 古人可能认为这些制度不适合日本社会。 其实科举有个优点就是录用官员较公平。 无论是什么人只要考高分就能当官发财。 可是科举这个制度有一个很严重的缺陷。 考生一般只有死记硬背才能考个好成绩。 这种学习态度在大陆连绵不断继承下来。 科举给中国带来的负面影响绝不可轻视。

December 21, 2007 at 12:47 PMHi watercarrier, English education in Japan seems to have a similar problem to that in China, and to make matters worse, we don’t even have what is called a cram education at school. I think rote learning is not so bad, especially when you are trying to master foreign languages. Of course, just memorizing words and rules does not necessarily enable you to speak/write in English, but at least better than nothing……..! Hi henry123! Thanks for your reply. I always enjoy reading your intriguing comments written in real Chinese. Actually, I felt the same way about my yesterday’s comment while writing it. That certainly was a somewhat go-round-in-circles argument, therefore what you pointed out was true. I couldn’t come up with proper words to describe it in Chinese. The only thing I thought of was 先有鸡还是有鸡蛋, which sounded a little “unsophisticated” to me. And, thankfully, you have shown me a more concise and appropriate translation “封闭曲线”. 中文播客没有白来！ One more thing, I sincerely hope that someday academic institutions in Asian countries will also be able to attract much more capable and talented foreign students/researchers than they are now. At least, no more brain drain to other countries!
