The word 孤独 basically emphasizes that you are alone or solitary, and it doesn’t necessarily always mean you feel lonely. Someone likes 孤独的 life. On the other hand, 寂寞 is usually tinged with negative feelings and doesn’t always mean that you are alone. You sometimes might feel 寂寞 even if you have a lot of good friends.
